  • For allergy sufferers, the bad news is that Ragweed pollen is just starting to make it's appearance this year. Remember, we are able to perform skin allergy testing in kids. Call us if you would like to schedule!
  • Currently we are seeing a lot of "the common cold", which is caused by a the virus Rhinovirus. Typical symptoms are cough, congestion, runny nose, sore throat, and possible fevers up to 102 for the first couple days. The cough typically lasts 10-14 days. If fever is lasting more than 4 days you should probably let us know. We sometimes see ear infections develop after colds in younger kids.
  • We are also still seeing lots of sore throats and upset stomachs due to a virus called Enterovirus. The typical symptoms with these are fevers (can get up to 104) for 3-4 days, along with upset stomach, usually some congestion and a cough. Sore throat is very common, and decreased appetite, possibly vomiting but more commonly diarrhea as well. Typically there is nothing to worry about with this, and symptomatic care and plenty of fluids is usually all that is required, but you would want to let us know if you are worried that your child is getting dehydrated, has a severe headache, or if fever is lasting for more than 4-days. It's sometimes hard to tell if they have Strep Throat or not with these symptoms, we can always test for Strep if you are concerned.
  • We have had many cases of Hand Foot and Mouth, which is caused by Coxsackie virus, but this seems to be slowing down over the past 2-weeks. This typically causes a very sore throat, decreased appetite, and often a rash around the mouth, on the hands and feet, and possibly up the legs. Plenty of fluids, Ibuprofen, and symptomatic care or usually all that is needed, but some younger kids can get dehydrated because the throat is so sore.
  • Of course with it being summer, we continue to see some kids with tick bites, and we always worry about a fever that develops in a child after they have been bitten by a tick. Wear bugspray and let us know if you are worried!
  • Finally, we continue to see cases of Strep throat. Typical symptoms are of course fever and sore throat, but you can also see headaches, nausea, and rash as well. If your child has a fever and a sore throat definitely let us know so we can get them tested!
